Maddie has a number of students for one to one tuition in violin, piano and voice. She holds a regular session on Saturday mornings and at other times to suit during the week. Lessons are held at her home studio in Kingsdown and typically last 30 or 45 minutes.

Students include adult beginners and returners and young students starting out on their musical journey. Some have a weekly lesson or ad hoc lessons in preparation for auditions and performances.

Maddie takes a “holistic” approach to her teaching, considering not just the technical aspects of learning to play but the students’ own goals, tastes in music, learning style, home environment, special strengths and personality. All her lessons include an element of playing or singing for enjoyment, ensemble work, sightreading, composition, music theory and history and improvisation to develop the “whole musician” and a lifelong love of music making.

Here’s what one of her students says about piano lessons with Maddie:

I’ve been a piano student of Maddie’s
for just under 11 months now and I have fairly recently passed my
initial grade, achieving a high distinction!  Like most people I know, I’ve always wanted to play a
musical instrument but never did anything about it until late last year
 – after speaking to Maddie I recognised she has a real passion &
desire for music and that really comes across in our lessons, inspiring
me to continue with my practice.  I really look forward to my lessons
as Maddie is very encouraging, kind and full of praise for my
performances, always finding a positive and also very patient on the
parts of the music that I struggle with often finding new and
interesting ways to help me understand and improve.  Nothing is ever
too much trouble for her – even by simplifying my favourite Take That
songs or printing out new pop or jazz songs for me to perform.
Maddie has a wonderful teaching environment, supported by her very
musically gifted family and a beautiful piano to perform on.
I thoroughly enjoy my piano lessons with Maddie, she has taught me
so much already – I had no musical background but now I can read
music, play scales and even write and perform my own little pieces, I just wish I’d started sooner.
I would recommend Maddie to anyone, any age, thinking of learning
to play the piano whether it’s to progress through the grades or just
play for the enjoyment.  A very caring and inspiring teacher… I hope you have just as much enjoyment from the piano as I have!”
